What is one of the biggest traps you can encounter in an audition?
If you are like a lot of young actors, you might reply with one word.
Or maybe you will protest that answer.
”No,” you will say. “It’s GOOD to be nervous, your nerves are there to help you!”
(This is a treatise currently taught by well-meaning community theatre directors and kindergarten teachers.)
There is a problem with either of these answers. And here it is.
In BOTH cases, you are judging your feelings– feelings that you just might have in every audition that you attend throughout your life.
You know these feelings. Your heart is racing and you can’t quite breathe. Your cells are vibrating like crazy, and your mind is LEAPING around- losing its “focus.”.
And here’s a tip. There is nothing wrong with these feelings. They are NORMAL. What can actually trip you up is not a feeling, but your definition or judgment of that feeling. Defining any feeling as nervousness- even GOOD nervousness- is where your problems begin. Because judging what you feel, whatever you feel, will not help your audition.
As an actor, your job is to make each moment authentic. You must live by your sense of truth.
To do this, you need to be IN YOUR BODY, experiencing every moment. And how can you actually EXPERIENCE what you are feeling, if you are spending your energy either trying to get rid of OR justifying your feelings?
When you fully feel your feelings, whatever they are, they do not rule you. They instead become a secret ingredient, a special sauce that makes your performance more compelling because it is TRUTHFUL.
When you enter that waiting room, leave judgment behind. Quiet your brain, breathe and fully experience every moment of your audition, from the waiting room, all through your preparation and performance, and even as you exit. YOU must BE PRESENT throughout, and ALL judgment is a road block to that presence.
So liberate your heightened energy from the labels such as, “fear” or nerves,” and let yourself be fully alive in your auditions. You will notice yourself starting to truly enjoy them, and you will notice yourself being noticed as well.
